Girl Skateboards Sean Malto Is evo’s Featured Rider

evo Featured Rider

By Chris Dickerson, Seattle, WA: We would like to introduce to you, the next featured rider for evo, one of the best skateboarders in the world, Girl Skateboards Team Rider, Sean Malto. Over the past few years, his clean and consistent style has made him one of the standout skateboarders on the scene. He is fun to watch whether he is competing at Street League or filming around the world. Cameron Talyor, one of our IT guys and avid skater here at evo, put together 11 questions he has always wanted to ask Sean.

Bio: Currently 23 years old and at the top of his game. Sean was born in Leavenworth, Kansas. He started skating in the late 90’s and at 13 scored his first sponsorship from a local skate shop. Malto turned pro in 2008 and joined the heavyweights on the Girl Skateboards Team that included the likes of Mike Carroll, Mikemo Capaldi and Eric Koston. In 2009, he was awarded Transworld’s Rookie of the Year and continues to compete and now he continues to film all over the world, bringing skateboarding to the masses.

Right now you can catch Malto in Pretty Sweet, a new video from Girl & Chocolate Skateboards, and at this year’s Nike’s Street League competition, where he is number 2 in the standings.

Before we get to the interview, check out this “Street League 2012: Best of Sean Malto” edit:

Back lip or front lip?
Malto: Back Lip

X games, Tampa, Street League… which one do you feel the most pressure in?
Malto: Street Leagues for sure. Being in an arena is pretty nerve racking.

How has Eric Koston influenced you in skating?
Malto: It’s an inspiration to see everything he’s done throughout his life in skateboarding. Seeing how professional he is while making it fun makes it hard to not want to follow in his footsteps.

Who is your favorite underdog in this year’s street league?
MaltoIshod Wair, he’s so sick!

What trick always gives you the most trouble?
Malto: Frontside flips, I’m going on 14 years and I still can’t do a good frontside flip.

What is your favorite country to skate in?
Malto: China, it’s just too good.

-Explain the difference between being sponsored by a company like Nike versus some of your other smaller company sponsors?
Malto: I guess the main difference is just what I put on myself being sponsored by Nike. Nike to me is the best shoe company in all of sports and for them to sponsor me makes me want to represent them as best as I possibly can.

-What did you really think you were going to end up doing when you grew up?
Malto: I wanted to be a pro skateboarder ever since I was ten years old. I feel very blessed every day that my dream came true.

-What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not skating?
Malto: Hang out with my friends!

-How does it feel to be a teen heartthrob?
Malto: Haha I don’t know. I don’t think about it too much.

-When you finally step off your board what do you want to say was your greatest accomplishment in your skateboarding career?
Malto: That I had the most fun and made the most friends that I possibly could!

-Who are your sponsors?
Malto: Girl SkateboardsNikeFourstar ClothingSpitfire WheelsThunder TrucksSkullcandy Headphones, Glassy Sunhaters, Diamond, Escapist Skateboarding and Grizzly Griptape
