Ian Coble's Photographer Insight
Our second Photographer Insight comes from friend, and keen-eyed photog Ian Coble. As a former aspiring professional skier, Ian is a self-taught photographer who began by documenting his friends and his travels during ski journeys. Now days he spends is time shooting editorial spreads and international ad campaigns around the world. Not bad for being self-taught huh? Ian is pretty inspiring to the rest of us. Check out some of his photos below and learn a little bit more of what it takes to be a professional photographer.
Shot at Meadow Lodge BC, just North of Rogers Pass. This was a shoot with Matchstick Productions (MSP). On this trip, we had to skin everywhere we went as the lodge wasn’t set up for helis or sleds. Here, Erik Hjorleifson and Mark Abma scout terrain on one of the only blue days we saw on a two week trip. Shot with a Nikon D3, with a 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS lens.
Same trip as above with MSP. Here, Mark Abma spins a 360 off of a pillow on a stormy day. The bulk of this trip the weather was snowy and socked in, relegating us to the trees for our skiing. Fortunately, the pillows around the lodge were all time. Camera Nikon D3 with a 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS lens
This was shot last year at Stevens Pass at the beginning of April in one of the storms that made up for an otherwise crappy winter here. With all the new snow, the pillows at Stevens were going off. Here, Tyler Ceccanti airs off of a pillow in a driving blizzard. Camera Nikon D3, lens 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS lens with An Elinhrom Ranger Speed AS strobe triggered off camera with a pocket wizard multi max
Stevens Pass, WA in early December last year. Ian McIntosh launching a cliff in Corona Bowl. Camera Nikon D3 with a 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS lens.
